Telling it Like it Is" – Giving and Receiving Feedback

Giving feedback can be difficult for many reasons. This course is aimed at managers of staff, but is suitable for anyone, who would like to use performance-related feedback to motivate and develop staff and colleagues. The course aim is to raise awareness of the inner/emotional and outer/practical aspects of giving feedback.
It will explore:
- Basic assumptions about feedback;
- The purpose of giving regular feedback as a performance management tool;
- How regular feedback can contribute a more focused Performance Review discussion;
- Ways to ensure feedback is effectively received;
- The importance of keeping development and motivation at the core of feedback conversations
Assertiveness and Dealing with Difficult People

Aims: To provide strategies and techniques for identifying behaviour types and communicating effectively, particularly with those people we find difficult.
Outcomes/Description: This course is suitable for those wishing to explore techniques for improving interpersonal communication, and develop confidence for dealing with difficult people and situations, e.g. saying 'NO' and managing your time and workload effectively.
Being assertive means having the ability to say directly what it is you want, you need or you feel, but not at the expense of others.

Campaigning – Making Your Voice Heard
Date: Thursday 28th February
Time: 9.30 am – 4.30 pm

Aim of course: To help groups develop the range of skills necessary to run successful campaigns including: lobbying and influencing politicians, organising direct action public speaking and dealing with the media.
This course is aimed at: People active in community groups, workers in voluntary sector agencies and anyone else who wants to get involved to make a difference for their community.
Course content:
- What is campaigning - discussing the range of ways that groups can carry through a campaign; planning a campaign; raising public awareness on your issue, organising public meetings, public speaking
- Attracting the attention of the media writing press releases, holding press conferences, giving an interview to the broadcast media – radio and TV
- Changing public policy – dealing with politicians – who’s who and what powers they have - how you get to them and how you put pressure on them;
- Direct action campaign tactics – organising stunts, pickets, demonstrations and direct action – publicising your cause and your group
Minute Taking Skills
Date: Wednesday 5th March
Time: 10am – 1pm

This practical course is for anyone who either takes minutes as part of their work, gets frustrated by poor minutes or would like to develop minute-taking skills. It looks at why minutes are important, what they should include and how to use minutes to promote action.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Recognise why minutes are important and how they are used
- Identify good and poor minutes of meetings
- Demonstrate what to include in minutes
- Recognise how to use minutes to promote action beyond meetings
- Feel more confident about taking minutes in meetings

Where does all your time go?
Do you find there are not enough hours in the day to complete your workload?
This course will help participants to maximise the time they have available by using time more efficiently.
By the end of the session participants will have:
- Identified their ‘time-stealers’
- Considered how to prioritise tasks
- Devised personal strategies for reducing or eliminating time- stealers and making efficient use of their time
- Made a personal action plan for priority areas for improving their time management

Safeguarding Children

The aim of the training is:
To provided introductory child protection and safeguarding training to people working with Children and Young People.

- Learn how to report your concerns about a child's welfare
- Contribute to the organisation’s strategy in preventing child abuse

How to prepare and Interpret Annual Accounts
Date: Thursday 6th March 2008

The course will enable participants to understand what will be required by their auditors or independent examiners. Participants will gain an understanding of what their annual accounts mean – including terminology & key trends.
The session will cover:
- Getting things ready for your accountant
- Check lists, information required & why
- Good practice and tips and ideas of what to do at the year end
- Statutory requirements for annual accounts
- Interpreting annual accounts
- Different types of accounts
There will also a chance to look at participants own accounts – therefore please bring a copy of your organisations accounts.
