Health Advice about Calabash Chalk Products

The Foods Standards Agency (FSA) has issued advice that calabash chalk and other related products should NOT be eaten, especially by pregnant and breastfeeding mothers as these products are harmful to foetal and maternal health. Calabash chalk is a traditional supplement taken by some Asian and African women as a remedy for morning sickness or as a nutritional supplement in pregnancy. It has been found to contain high levels of lead and arsenic, both which are toxic to the foetus and mother.

You can download an alert document from Public Health England and a patient information leaflet below which provide more details. The patient information leaflet can be used with target groups as identified.
