Local NHS Trusts Sign Groundbreaking LGB Mental Health Agreement

Date:

On 17th May 1990 the World Health Organisation finally removed 'homosexuality' from its list of diseases. Ever since, this date has been marked around the world and known as International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO Day).

This year in Bradford the 17th May marked another significant event; each of our local NHS Trusts came together to sign a statement saying that they "do not regard 'homosexuality' as a disorder to be treated". In other words, they acknowledge that some Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people still experience attempts by medical practictioners (often private) to 'cure' them (sometimes known as "Reparative Therapy"), and that this cannot be supported, nor tolerated.
